Discerning Hearts

Discerning Hearts is basically a podcast player with one very specific job: give you good, substantial Catholic teaching to listen to while you drive, fold laundry, or go for a walk. It's not going to win any design awards — the app is built on a template platform (Shoutem, if you're curious), so it looks a little plain by 2026 standards — but the content behind that plain interface is genuinely excellent.

What you get is a deep library of audio and video series from real spiritual directors and scholars, not just inspirational one-liners. Fr. Timothy Gallagher walks through discernment of spirits. Deacon James Keating and Dr. Anthony Lilles get into prayer and interior life at a level most apps don't bother with. There's Kris McGregor's "Inside the Pages" for people who want a guided read-through of spiritual classics, plus contributions from Mike Aquilina, Msgr. John Esseff, and Archbishop George Lucas, among others. It leans more toward formation than entertainment — this is closer to a graduate seminar than a highlight reel.

The 4.9 rating from almost a thousand people isn't a fluke. People who use this app tend to use it a lot, and the reviews read like they're from folks who've been listening for years. That said, if you're looking for something slick with modern navigation, offline downloads that just work, or a clean library view, it can feel a bit clunky — you're here for the audio, not the app itself.
