Our Review

Christian Creeds & Confessions is a searchable library of historical Christian creeds, confessions, and catechisms. The core collection comes from the Continental Reformed and English Presbyterian traditions, with the three ancient creeds included as a foundation everyone shares.

By default you get the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed; then the Three Forms of Unity — the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort; and the Westminster Standards, which include the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms. Beyond those defaults, you can download more documents from inside the app, including some from non-Reformed traditions. Search works across the whole library and within individual documents. Scripture references are hyperlinked.

For Catholic readers, this is a Protestant resource, and a specifically Reformed one. The Westminster Standards and the Three Forms of Unity are the dogmatic statements of confessional Presbyterian and Dutch Reformed churches. They reject Catholic teaching on a number of points — sacraments, the papacy, justification, the saints, Mary — and they say so plainly. None of that should be a surprise; it is the point of those documents. The ancient creeds are common ground.

It fits Catholics who study Reformed theology — converts in either direction, seminarians, apologists, anyone in ecumenical conversations or working through a comparative theology class. Reading the Westminster Confession side by side with the Catechism of the Catholic Church is one of the cleaner ways to understand where Catholics and Reformed Christians actually differ. The app makes the texts easy to search and quote.

It is not a Catholic resource. The Catechism of the Catholic Church and the decrees of the Council of Trent are not in here. If you want Catholic confessional documents, you need a different app. It is also not devotional. It is reference material.

Free. By James H. Price, an independent developer in the Reformed tradition. On the App Store: Christian Creeds & Confessions. Useful if you study theology outside your own tradition; not where you go for daily prayer.

App Store Description

This application provides a searchable library of the most universally used Christian creeds, confessions and catechisms of the Continental Reformed and English Presbyterian churches.

Included by default are the three ancient creeds (the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed); the 'Three Forms of Unity' (the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort); and the Westminster Standards (the Westminster Confession and the Shorter and Larger Catechisms.) Many additional documents may be downloaded from within the application, including a number from non-Reformed traditions.

Any scripture references provided in the original document are hyperlinked and may be viewed within the app itself (KJV), or by linking to a user-specified native bible app or external web site. A full-text search capability (with editable search history) allows you to instantly find words, phrases and scripture references within a single document or across the entire library.

This application will help anyone better understand and appreciate the depth and richness of the Christian faith as it has been historically understood.
