New Jerusalem Catholic Bible is a free Bible reading app from an independent developer. The name needs an asterisk right away: despite the word "Catholic" on the label, the app contains 66 books, which is the Protestant canon, not the Catholic one.
What you get is a straightforward English Bible reader. All the books, chapters, and verses are available offline, so it works on a plane or anywhere without a signal. There is a verse of the day, quick navigation between books, an audio option so you can listen instead of read, and tools for sharing verses or turning them into decorated verse images for sending to family.
To its credit, the reading experience is decent. Navigation is quick, the offline access is genuinely useful, and the audio feature is a help for tired eyes or a long drive. I have seen far clumsier Bible apps from much bigger outfits.
It could serve someone who wants a basic, free Bible on their phone for daily reading and does not mind which canon they are getting. The verse of the day and sharing tools make it easy to keep a little Scripture moving through the household.
But Catholics should go in with eyes open. A Catholic Bible has 73 books. This one is missing Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, and 1 and 2 Maccabees, along with parts of Daniel and Esther. It is also not the New Jerusalem Bible translation that Catholic readers know from their bookshelf; the title borrows the name. The developer is an independent app maker, not a Catholic publisher. That is why we have it filed under Christian rather than Catholic, whatever the App Store listing says.
