Our Review

The Holy Bible FREE is an indie King James Version Bible reader by a developer named Michael Quach. It gives you the full KJV text on your phone, plus a few small extras like daily verses and the ability to share passages. That's the whole app.

Open it up and you can jump straight to a book and chapter, search for a phrase, or tap into a daily inspirational verse. There's bookmarking, a basic night mode, and the ability to copy a passage and send it in a text. No audio, no commentary, no study notes. The interface is plain and functional.

What I appreciate is that it does one thing and does it cleanly. There are a lot of free Bible apps cluttered with stickers, leaderboards, and engagement gimmicks. This one stays out of the way. If you just want to find a verse and read it, you can do that in two taps.

It's a fit if you want a basic KJV reader for memorization, for sharing verses with family, or for a quick reference during a Bible study with Protestant friends. Light enough to keep on an older phone or an iPad you carry to church.

For Catholic users, the King James Version is the standard Protestant English Bible and doesn't include the deuterocanonical books — Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, 1 and 2 Maccabees — that the Catholic Church accepts as canonical Scripture. The KJV is beautiful English and worth reading for the Gospels and the Psalms, but for a complete Catholic Bible you'll want something like the Douay-Rheims, the RSV-CE, or the NABRE.

Free with ads, from Michael Quach. Available on the App Store: The Holy Bible FREE: King James Version. Fine if a Protestant friend asks what KJV app you'd recommend — for Catholic daily reading, look at a Catholic Bible app instead.
