Butler’s Lives of the Saints

Butler's Lives of the Saints is an audiobook app of the 1878 Benziger Brothers edition of Alban Butler's famous saints' biographies. There's a short life of the saint or saints commemorated on each day of the year, plus a short reflection at the end. You open the app on any given day and it shows you that day's saint or saints. Tap play and a clear narrator reads the biography aloud — usually three to six minutes per saint. What I appreciate is the source. Butler's Lives was the standard Catholic reference on the saints for over two centuries before the more recent revisions of the Roman Martyrology. It's written in a slightly old-fashioned style — Victorian, devotional, not embarrassed about miracles or virtue — and listening to it feels like sitting in a parish library in 1900. The narrator handles the prose well, which matters with material like this.

Good fit for someone who wants the saint of the day worked into their morning or evening routine. Especially good for a drive — five minutes in the car and you've heard the life of a saint you didn't know existed. Useful for parents who want their kids exposed to the saints in a substantive way, not just a coloring-book version.

It's not the modern, post-Vatican II calendar — Butler predates that revision by a century. Some saints' feast days will line up with today's General Roman Calendar and some won't.
