The short version

The old Catholic Encyclopedia, more than 11,500 articles, stored on your phone with search, bookmarks and a dark reading mode. A solid $1.99 reference for catechists and students, but it's pre-Vatican II and hasn't been updated since 2018.

Catholic Encyclopedia Offline puts the 1914 Catholic Encyclopedia on your phone, with all 11,500-plus articles stored locally so it works without Wi-Fi.

You download the whole thing once on first launch, then you can read anywhere. Articles are listed alphabetically, but the search is the real way in — type a name, a council, a saint, a doctrine, and it pulls up the relevant entries. You can bookmark articles, adjust the font size, share or print an entry, and switch to a dark reading mode at night.

What I appreciate is having the whole reference in your pocket with no signal needed. The 1914 edition was a serious piece of scholarship — long articles, full names, dates, and a tone that takes the subject seriously. Read an entry on St. Augustine or the Council of Trent and you get something closer to a small book chapter than a Wikipedia paragraph.

Useful for an apologist, a catechist, a graduate student, an RCIA candidate, or anyone who wants a deeper reference than what shows up in a Google search. Also good for parents fielding questions like "who was St. Christopher" — there's actually a real article you can read together.

The big caveat is the date. This is the 1914 encyclopedia. It's pre-Vatican II, pre-modern biblical scholarship, and pre-most of the saints canonized in the last hundred years. The theology is solid Thomism, but if you want a current entry on, say, Vatican II or a recent encyclical, you'll need to look elsewhere. The language can also feel a little dense to modern ears.

$1.99 one-time, by Martin Vcelak, an independent developer. Available on the App Store: Catholic Encyclopedia Offline. A solid reference to have around, as long as you remember its date.
