AngelGuard: Spiritual Warfare

AngelGuard is a Catholic audio prayer app for spiritual protection: prayer for the moments when fear, temptation or a hard night gets the better of you. Every prayer is pre-recorded: you press play and a voice leads you through it, so you can pray even when you can’t gather your own words.

The library covers a lot of ground. There are the St. Michael prayers and prayers to the holy angels, guided audio for the full Rosary in all four sets of mysteries, the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the three o’clock hour, Compline from the Liturgy of the Hours, the Stations of the Cross, the Memorare and the other Marian prayers, and night prayers such as Psalm 91 looped through the wakeful hours. There is also a short Spiritual Protection course that teaches what the Church actually says about angels, temptation and spiritual warfare, with the sacraments first, and an anonymous, moderated prayer wall where people pray for each other’s intentions.

What strikes me is the honesty of the premise. Most prayer apps assume you’ll build a habit. This one assumes there are nights when the rosary slips out of your hand and you need someone else to carry the prayer while you hold on. Spiritual warfare can be a subject that attracts fear and superstition, and it’s good to see an app that keeps it anchored in the Church’s ordinary means: prayer, the sacraments and trust in God.

It fits people carrying anxiety, grief or fear, anyone who sleeps badly, and anyone helped by hearing prayer rather than reading it. The night prayers are a real mercy for the wakeful hours.

Some caveats. It runs on a subscription after a 7-day free trial. It comes from a small company in the Netherlands rather than a Catholic publisher, and the listing doesn’t say who records the prayers or which priest or community reviewed the course. On privacy: there are no ads in the app, and the developer says it never sells anyone’s data. Apple’s label does list “tracking”, and here is why. The iPhone app uses Meta’s standard measurement kit to learn which of AngelGuard’s own Facebook and Instagram ads work, so it tells Meta when the app is installed and opened and when a trial or subscription starts, tied to an anonymous app ID rather than your name or email. Your prayers, intentions, listening and prayer-wall posts are never shared, and if you tap “Ask App Not to Track”, purchases stop being linked. When we asked, the developer answered quickly and openly, and was very helpful.

Free to download with a 7-day trial, then a subscription, from CCC Impact B.V., on iPhone and Android. Worth the trial if the nights are the hard part; decide about the subscription after a week of real use.
