4.4/5The short version
A Catholic app blocker that asks you to pray before you scroll. Your chosen apps open only after a short traditional prayer, the countdown follows the Church's calendar, and the free version covers the basics.
Catholic DeVice is an app blocker where the way back into your phone is a prayer. You mark the apps that eat your time as "vice apps," and when you open one you get a full-screen Catholic prayer instead, with a short countdown and an Amen. Then the app opens for a set window before the wall comes back.
The details show someone thought about the Church's calendar. The countdown runs longer on Fridays and through Lent, and there's a free Friday Penance lockout you can schedule. The Angelus rings at 6, noon and 6, switching to the Regina Caeli in Eastertide, and a Liturgical Year view shows the Proper of the Day, including the 1962 calendar for those who pray the older form.
The prayers are the reason to trust it. They come from Scripture, the liturgy, the saints and traditional devotion: the Rosary, the Divine Mercy and Sacred Heart novenas, the Psalms, the Desert Fathers, Padre Pio and St. Thérèse's Little Way. The developer says plainly that none of it is AI-written. From the wall you can step into a Bookshelf of classic Catholic texts, including the Douay-Rheims Gospels and Psalms, The Imitation of Christ and Butler's Lives of the Saints, all readable offline.
There are no streaks to break. It counts Days of Fidelity instead, which only go up, so one bad day doesn't wipe out your progress. It's a small thing, but a kind one.
The free version is genuinely usable: two vice apps on the Praywall, Retreats that lock apps right away, Friday Penance, an opt-in adult-content filter called Custody of the Eyes, and all the statistics. Premium ($6.99 a month, $39.99 a year or $89.99 once) adds unlimited vice apps, recurring schedules for work hours or Sundays, and the Vow, which locks your settings so you can tighten them but not loosen them until a waiting period, a trusted person's PIN or another release you picked.
Compared with Pray Shield, which pauses apps at four set prayer hours and offers Catholic prayers as one style among three, Catholic DeVice is Catholic all the way through and puts a prayer in front of every app you've marked. It's made for adults working on their own habits, not as a parental control. The developer says app detection stays on your device. The App Store label links your name, email and a user ID to you if you make an account, and Google Play's data safety form is broader, so give it a read before you sign up.
Catholic DeVice: App Blocker is free on the App Store and Google Play, by Kingfisher Technologies.
Is it faithful?
Built from Catholic sources: Scripture (Douay-Rheims), the liturgy, the saints and traditional devotions, with the 1962 calendar offered alongside. The developer states no prayers are AI-generated. No imprimatur is claimed.
