Catholic Missal for Nigeria

Catholic Missal for Nigeria is a free Daily Mass readings app aimed at Catholics in Nigeria. It uses the Ordo approved by the Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria, so the readings line up with what you would hear at Mass at home.

The main feature is the daily readings — the first reading, responsorial psalm, gospel, and the proper for the day. You can scroll through past and upcoming days, and the layout is plain text without a lot of fluff. It also includes the order of Mass and some basic Catholic prayers. There is no audio and no homily content. The app is small and quick to open.

The reason to use this one over a more polished international Missal is the local calendar. Solemnities and memorials of saints particular to Nigeria show up on the right days. If you have ever tried to follow a US-based Missal at a parish in Lagos or Abuja, you know how often the saints do not match. This one matches.

This is a good fit for Nigerian Catholics at home or in the diaspora who want to pray with the same readings their home parish is using that day. It also works fine for anyone who wants a no-frills daily readings app on iPhone.

What it is not: this is not a full Missal with the lectionary in three years of cycles laid out for study. It is a daily reader. The interface is functional, not beautiful. There are occasional formatting quirks in the text. If you want a richer experience with audio readings and reflections, you will want a different app alongside this one.

The app is free from Edward Emwanta on the App Store. Download Catholic Missal for Nigeria. For Catholics in Nigeria, it does exactly what it should — gives you today's readings with the right calendar — and that is worth the install.
