Our Review
Contemplatio is a Rosary app that pairs each Hail Mary with a piece of sacred art. As you move through the mysteries, the images change — the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity — drawing your eye and your mind into the scene you are meant to be meditating on.
The app includes over 200 images of moments from the life of Christ, organized by mystery. It supports English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. You can pray silently with the visual prompts, or follow the on-screen prayers. There are options for the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous Mysteries.
This is the kind of app I would not have expected to like but actually do. Praying the Rosary while looking at a tender 15th-century Annunciation, or a heavy, somber Crucifixion, helps with the part of the Rosary that is hardest for me. Actually meditating on the mystery instead of running through the prayers on autopilot. It is closer to the original purpose of the beads.
Good for people who pray the Rosary already but want help with meditation. Helpful for visual learners, for parents teaching kids the mysteries one image at a time, and for anyone who finds the Rosary going dry. The multi-language support makes it a good pick for households where Grandma prays in Portuguese.
It is not an audio Rosary, so you still tap and read. The interface is a little cluttered in places. And the art selection is broad rather than curated, so a few images may be less to your taste than others.
Free, by Thieberson Gomes. Available on the App Store: Contemplatio: Rosary on images. A genuinely thoughtful Rosary aid. Try it for a week and see if the meditations land more deeply.
App Store Description
Available in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian languages, this app makes it possible to contemplate the mysteries of the Holy Rosary through the visualization of artworks of great artists of history. There are more than 200 images about the mysteries of Christ's life that help to pray and meditate on the moment related to each mystery.
The images have always been widely used by the church as a catechesis tool for the people. With them, the sacred writings take shape allowing anyone to understand the infinite love of God.
With this app it is possible to meditate through many images of the same mystery, allowing to observe the same moment of different perspectives, with different details emphasized by the artist and his experience with the Word of God.
We hope this app also be a rescue of the sacred art, so rich and so abundant in the history of the Catholic Church.
