Our Review
Life of Mary Lite is a set of short daily meditations on the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the free, smaller version of a fuller app, meant to give you a taste of the whole.
The meditations are built for a month — the traditional Marian months of May and October — with a reflection for each day, though you can pray them any time of year. Each one takes a moment from Mary's life as Scripture and tradition hand it down, and breaks it into a few practical points to guide your thinking and prayer. You read, you sit with it, you pray.
I like the shape of it. A short daily meditation is far easier to keep up than a long one, and walking through Mary's life a day at a time over a month gives the devotion a real arc instead of being scattered. Tying the reflection to a few clear points keeps it from drifting into vague feeling, which is a trap Marian material can fall into.
It is a good fit for the month of May or October when you want a simple daily Marian devotion, or for anyone who wants to grow closer to Our Lady in small, steady steps. It works well as the few quiet minutes at the start or end of a day.
Remember this is the "Lite" version, so it is a sample — you get part of the content, and the full set is a separate paid app. It is from an independent developer, and the presentation is plain. If you take to it, you will probably want the complete version before long.
It is free as a Lite edition, made by Leonard Mamangkey. You can find it on the App Store: Life of Mary Lite. As an easy way to begin a daily Marian devotion, it is worth a try.
App Store Description
Helping you to meditate on the life of Blessed Virgin Mary.
The short meditations are intended especially for the Month of May or October, though they may be used at any time with profit, particularly in connection with novenas and the celebration of the feasts of Our Lady. They are founded on the chief incidents in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary as recorded in Holy Scripture, or handed down by tradition. Each of them is broken up into three heads or points, intended to furnish, directly or indirectly, some practical suggestion to the devout servant of Mary. They are taken from "The Devout Year" (Maria Magnificata), by Rev. R. F. Clarke, S.J.
In this lite version, the meditations for odd-numbered days are available:
Day 1 - Mary's Immaculate Conception Day 3 - Mary's Earliest Gifts Day 5 - The Birth of Mary Day 7 - Mary's Life in the Temple Day 9 - The Marriage of Mary Day 11 - The Incarnation Day 13 - Mary's Time of Expectancy Day 15 - Mary's Purification Day 17 - The Flight to Egypt Day 19 - Mary's Loss of Jesus for Three Days Day 21 - Mary at Cana Day 23 - Mary Meets Jesus Carrying the Cross Day 25 - Jesus is Placed in His Mother's Arms Day 27 - Jesus Appears to Mary after the Resurrection Day 29 - Mary's Death Day 31 - Mary's Coronation as Queen of Heaven
In the full version you will also get the even-numbered days:
Day 2 - Mary's First Graces Day 4 - God's Design in Beautifying Mary Day 6 - The Presentation of Mary in the Temple Day 8 - Mary's Espousals Day 10 - The Annunciation Day 12 - The Visitation Day 14 - The Nativity Day 16 - Simeon's Prophecy to Mary Day 18 - Mary's Life at Nazareth Day 20 - The Death of St. Joseph Day 22 - Mary during Our Lord's Public Life Day 24 - Mary at the Foot of the Cross Day 26 - Mary Sees Jesus Laid in the Sepulchre Day 28 - Mary the Mother of the Infant Church Day 30 - Mary's Assumption to Heaven
"Oh, how powerful are the motives of this devotion, and how wonderful are its effects! If, therefore, you are tossed to and fro on the stormy ocean of this world, do not turn away your eyes from this resplendent star, lest you perish in the tempest. If the winds of temptation blow, if you are in danger of being dashed against the rocks of adversity, look at the star, call upon Mary. If the waves of pride, of ambition, of detraction, of anger, of avarice, or lust, threaten your soul, call upon Mary. If, troubled at the sight of your manifold sins, frightened at the thought of the just Judge, you begin to sink into the abyss of sorrow and despair, think of Mary. In all dangers, in all your trials, invoke Mary. Let her name be on your lips, let her memory be in your heart. If you follow her, you will not go astray; if you trust in her, you will not be disappointed; if she takes care of you, you need not fear; if she protects you. and intercedes for you, you will safely arrive at the haven of eternal felicity."
