Novena

Novena is a Catholic prayer app organized around the saints and the nine-day prayers traditionally offered to them. It collects thirty-six saints and a novena for each.

The saints are sorted into four categories — Health, Occupations, Situations, and States of Life — so you can find one suited to whatever you are carrying. Each saint comes with a vintage holy card, and the app explains the symbols in the image, the attributes that tell you who you are looking at. There is also a glossary that lets you search by a specific problem or circumstance and points you to the right saint and prayer.

A novena is nine days of repeated prayer, and the repetition is the point — it slows you down and quiets the mind. I found the patron categories genuinely helpful when I did not know who to turn to. Reading a saint's story and then praying their novena over nine days made the asking feel less like a shot in the dark and more like talking to someone who understood the trouble.

It is a good fit for anyone facing a particular worry — an illness, a job, a hard situation — who wants to pray with the saints rather than alone. It suits people who love the old holy cards and the meaning behind them, and anyone learning which saints are invoked for what.

This is a fixed collection of thirty-six saints, so it will not cover every patron you might want, and it is a set of prayers rather than a calendar or a daily devotional. The art and prayers are traditional, which is the appeal, but do not expect a constantly updating feed. It is a small, focused tool.

It costs ninety-nine cents, made by Gray Dog Apps. You can find it on the App Store: Novena. For praying with the saints in a time of need, it is a dollar well spent.
