The short version

More than sixteen thousand articles from the old Catholic Encyclopedia on Church history, doctrine and the saints, all readable offline. A trustworthy deep reference, but it predates Vatican II, carries a $0.49 subscription, and hasn't been updated since 2022.

This app puts the old Catholic Encyclopedia on your phone. It is the full reference work, more than sixteen thousand articles, set up so you can read it without an internet connection.

Once it is installed everything lives on your device. You can scroll through the articles alphabetically or use the search to jump straight to a topic. Tap an entry and you get the full text, the same long, careful articles the printed Encyclopedia is known for, covering Church history, doctrine, saints, places, and the people who shaped all of it.

What I appreciate is that it does not water anything down. So much online religious writing now is a paragraph long and gone. This is the real thing, written by people who knew the subject and expected the reader to sit with it. When a name comes up at Mass or in a book and you want the actual history behind it, this is the place to look it up.

It is good for anyone who likes to dig, for RCIA sponsors and catechists who get asked hard questions, and for the reader who wants a Catholic reference they can trust sitting in their pocket.

It is not light reading and it is not current. The Catholic Encyclopedia was written in the early twentieth century, so the language is older and it will not cover anything after that, including the Second Vatican Council. Treat it as a deep historical reference, not a news source.

It is free, from developer Martin Vcelak. On the App Store here: Catholic Encyclopedia. A genuinely useful reference to keep on hand, as long as you remember its age.
