Contrite: Catholic Confession

Contrite is an Android app with one job: helping you prepare for Confession. It walks you through an examination of conscience, keeps everything you mark private, and then helps you through the confession itself.

The examination is personalized. You choose whether you're single or married and can add responsibilities like parent, student, employee, manager, caregiver, or public authority. Contrite then leaves out the questions that don't apply to your state of life, so you're not wading through material written for someone else. You work through it commandment by commandment, mark what you need to remember, and add private notes.

When you're ready, Confession Mode organizes what you've prepared and gives simple prompts to help you begin and move through the sacrament, while leaving the priest to guide it. Afterward, a feature called Burn permanently destroys your preparation, notes and all.

Privacy is the reason to choose it. Everything stays on your device. There's no cloud sync for confession data, and the developer never sees your preparation. It keeps the date of your last confession without keeping a history of what you confessed. On supported phones, Quiet Mode cuts notification interruptions while you pray.

It also includes a Catholic prayer library, optional reminders, offline access, and English and Spanish. It's a good fit for anyone who finds the examination of conscience overwhelming, for people returning to the sacrament after a long time away, and for anyone uneasy about typing sins into an app. It doesn't judge the gravity of sins or replace a priest, and it says so plainly.
