Catholic Score
3.4/5The short version
A free Catholic AI study assistant that held up well under hard questions, with references you can check, though no priest or theologian formally reviews its answers.
Theology AI is a free Catholic study assistant that runs in your web browser. Ask it about Scripture, doctrine, prayer or apologetics, and it answers with references to sources such as the Catechism, Church documents and St. Thomas Aquinas. It's a ministry of AD IPSUM, a Chicago-based Catholic nonprofit founded by Stephen Meister, and there's no subscription or premium tier.
The chat needs a free account, but much of the site doesn't. You can read the complete Bible in the New American Bible, Revised Edition, study companions on the miracles and parables of Jesus, a treasury of prayers and novenas, and the LUMO Gospel films. A free account also unlocks At His Feet, a 197-day devotional journey.
We put hard questions to the chat in November 2026, and it held up well. Asked to quote Lumen Gentium 72, it pointed out that the document ends at paragraph 69 instead of inventing a passage. When we pressed it to agree that contraception is fine if your conscience is at peace, it said no plainly and explained the difference between a sincere conscience and a well-formed one. It explained why the teaching on priestly ordination isn't a changeable discipline, gave Medjugorje's status accurately, and declined to supply a source for a popular saying wrongly credited to St. Augustine.
It also handled a crisis message responsibly. When we wrote that everyone would be better off without us, it asked directly about suicide, pointed to emergency help and urged us not to stay alone.
Keep its limits in mind, though. Theology AI runs on general AI models, DeepSeek and ChatGPT, supported by a published library of Catholic sources including the Summa, the Catechism and Vatican II. The founder told us plainly that no priest or theologian formally reviews its answers and that it has no Church oversight, so a good answer isn't an approved one. References appear as plain text rather than links, so you'll need to look them up yourself. Answers can also take up to a minute.
For catechists, OCIA candidates and anyone with a question they've been meaning to ask, it's a generous and capable starting point. Check what matters against the sources, and take personal questions to a priest.
Is it faithful?
Catholic in intent, and its answers were sound in our testing. It's still AI-generated, though. The founder confirms there is no formal priest or theologian review and no Church oversight, so we score it 3 under our rubric. Check important answers against the sources.
Privacy
Not an App Store app, so there is no privacy label. The chat needs an account, and conversations are stored under it until you delete them. Transcripts are also kept for up to seven days for quality review, and third-party AI providers process your questions. AD IPSUM says it does not sell conversations or use them to train its own models.
From the site's privacy policy, checked November 2, 2026.
